Occupational therapy programs are based on understanding how people deal with life’s sensations. We specifically look and test for how an individual perceives or organises sensations from life and body experiences. Essentially, the occupational therapist is trying to see if the child’s internal sensory systems are working properly together.

We look at attention from both a cognitive and sensory perspective. Current research points to there being different kinds of attention that rely on different brain systems.  It means that a child may have problems with one sort of attention and not with another.

Comprehensive Assessment for Secondary School Students

This assessment is useful for students who are having difficulties in a number of areas.  The assessment tools used and areas assessed vary depending upon these areas of concern.  However, this is often a ‘developmental’ type assessment that commonly includes looking at a range of skills, including fine motor, gross motor, language skills, handwriting, visual perception, attention, memory and planning/organisation skills.

Handwriting Assessment for Secondary School Students

A handwriting assessment focuses specifically on biomechanical factors such as hand function and pen control, in addition to cognitive factors such as attention, memory and planning abilities, to determine why the student is having problems with handwriting.
